Nun bin ich mittlerweile 9 Tage in Australien und bin noch nicht eine einzige Etappe geradelt :-(Now I am 9 days in Australia and didn’t rode a stage so far :-(

Da ich nur so ein bisschen grob geplant hatte, war mir bei Buchung meiner Flüge nicht klar, dass der Norden Australiens tropisch ist, geschweige denn, dass dazu auch noch Regenzeit ist. In der es sehr heiß wird und auch häufig unerwartet, aber stark regnet. Die sporadischen Monsune überfluten die Straßen zwische Darwin, Tennant Creek und Townsville und Gelegenheiten Wasser nachzufüllen können mehr als 250km entfernt sein. Nun ja, das waren für mich einige Gründe die Strecke von Darwin an die Ostküste nicht mit dem Rad, sondern mit dem Bus zurück zu legen.Cause of my rough planning I was not aware that northern Australia is tropical and has wet season this time of the year. And in the wet season you may have maximum heat and sudden and often heavy rains. The sporadic monsoons are flooding the street between Darwin, Tennant Creek and Townsville and opportunities to refill water may be more than 205k away. Well, for me that were some reasons to go from Darwin to the east coast not by bike but by bus.

Trotzdem hatte ich wirklich schöne Tage in Darwin mit meinem Gastgeber Alex und Townsville mit meinen Gastgebern Mick and Jen :-)Nevertheless I had wonderful days with my host Alex in Darwin and with my hosts Mick and Jen in Townsville :-)

Zu guter Letzt gings dann noch ein paar Tage zu den Niagara Fällen und Toronto. Faul mir selber etwas rauszusuchen, hab ich einfach mal die günstige Empfehlung meiner Lieblingsmeike gebucht und fand mich dann Montagmorgens um 7:00 in Chinatown abfahrend in einem Bus voller Asiaten und einem Tobi wieder. Mein chinesischer Vokabelschatz und meine Reiseerfahrung sind nun um einiges größer :-)Last but not least I went some days to the Niagra Falls and Toronto. Too lazy to look for tours I just booked a thrifty tour my favorite Meike recommended and found myself on monday morning in a bus full of asians and one Tobi leaving Chinatown. I extended my chinese vocabulary and travel experience on this tour :-)

Wir haben alle bestimmt schon hier und da die Touribusse der Asiaten erleben dürfen. Bus hält, eine Horde fernöstlicher Menschen steigt aus, alle fotografieren sich in allen Kombinationen mit anderen und der Sehenswürdigkeit und nach 20 Minuten ist der ganze Spuk vorbei und der Bus wieder weg. Diesmal gehörte ich zum Bus. Auf der Tour habe ich unter anderem gelernt, wie so etwas abläuft. Alles ist auf die Minute durchgeplant, um keine davon zu verschenken, denn relaxen und durchatmen kann man ja im Bus. Und es wird einem die schwierige Entscheidung abgenommen, was man und wo man und wie lange man essen möchte. Wie praktisch ;-)We all have once seen a bus full of asians tourists on holidays, I guess. The bus stops, a horde of far east guys come out of the bus, taking pictures in every possible constellation of them and the attraction and 20 minutes later they’re gone and there’s silence again. This time I was in the bus. On this tour I learned how this kind of travelling is organized.. Everything is planned dead on time, not to waste a minute, ’cause you may relax and have a breath on the bus. And you don’t need to decide what, where and how long you want to eat. Easy, isn’t it ;-)

Beispiel am ersten Halt des Watgins Glen State Park. Ein wohl hübscher Park mit einigen Wasserfällen. Reiseführerin: “Sie haben 55 Minuten Zeit. Folgen sie dem Gorge-Pfad und halten Sie in den ersten 20 Minuten nicht an, um Fotos zu machen. In den folgenden 15 Minuten wird der Park schöner, machen Sie dort Ihre Fotos. In den letzten 20 Minuten gehen Sie bitte auf Toilette im Souvenirshop. Danach direkt wieder zum Bus und seien Sie pünktlich. Die nächste Pause wird erst wieder in 2,5 Stunden sein.”. Ich hab mir stattdessen ein megafettes Eis am Strand am nahegelegenen See gegönnt :-)The first attraction was the Watgins Glen State Park for example. Guide: “You have 55 minutes. Follow the Gorge path but don’t stop in the first 20 minutes to take photos. In the following 15 minutes the scenery will be nicer, take your photos then. The last 20 minutes you should use to go to the restrooms and the souvenir shop. Then you go directly to the bus and be on time. Next break will be in 2,5 hours.”. Well, I skipped the park, but had a huge icecream on a beach at a nice lake nearby :-)

Sehr suspekt kam der Reiseleiterin auch vor, dass dieser komische eurpäische Lockenkopf nur eine der 11 hinzubuchbaren Attraktionen gebucht hat und daher nur weitere 24$, anstatt 296$ ausgegeben hat. Ich geb es zu, ich habe mir das Niagara Falls IMax (20$) mit einer Dokumentation über die Niagara Fälle gespart. Stattdessen habe ich mir in der Zeit die Niagara Fälle angeschaut. Und ich hab mir auch eine Aufführung (14$) amerikanischer Ureinwohner… ähm, nunja verkleideter Leute, gespart und mir stattdessen die Niagara Fälle angeschaut. Auch das Meeresfrüchtebüffett (45$) im Tower habe ich mir gespart, stattdessen nen Salat mit 3 Kolumbianern (aus Medellín! :) mit Blick auf die Niagara Fälle gegabelt. Die Bootstour an die Niagarafälle war feucht fröhlich und jeden der 24 Dollar wert! Die Niagarafälle an sich fand ich ganz nett, aber nicht so beeindruckend, wie ich dachte. Meine Tour zum Salto de Candelas hat mir wesentlich mehr Spaß gemacht und auf der Beeindrucktseinskala geb ich beiden Wasserfällen eine 9 von 10 :-pThe guide was suprised of this strange european curly guy as I did just book only one additional attraction with a fee of $24 instead of all 11 additional attractions which would have resulted in additional $296. I admit that I did not go to the IMax cinema ($20) to watch a documentary about the Niagara Falls, but went to see the Niagara Falls instead. I also admit, I didn’t join the show of the native americans (15$)… well, guys in costumes, but went to see the Niagara Falls. I also skipped the seafood buffet ($45) in the Skylon Tower, but had a salad with three colombians guys (from Medellín! :) at the Niagara Falls. The boat trip to the bottom of the Niagara Falls was worth every of the $24! The Niagara Falls itself weren’t that impressive that I thought. My tour to the Salto de Candelas was much more joy and on the being-impressed-scale I give a 9 out of 10 for both waterfalls :-p

Was ich noch gelernt habe:What else I’ve learned:

• In China z.B. haben die Leute maximal 10 Urlaubstage, was dann wohl zu dem etwas anderen Reiseverhalten führt.
• Wenn man in einem Reisebus voller Asiaten sitzt, die alle problemlos über die Grenze kommen, wird man als für diese Gruppe untypisch deutscher nochmal zur Befragung unter vier Augen gebeten.
• Wenn du in einem chinesischen Restaurant dein Essen bekommst, fange an zu essen, ohne zu hinterfragen, ob es auch das Gericht ist, was du bestellt hast. Eventuell wird dir 10 Minuten später jemand dein richtiges Gericht bringen und du hast die Lacher und ein Gratisessen auf deiner Seite.
• Laut rülpsen ist völlig legitim.
• Es gestaltet sich als sehr schwierig bis unmöglich in Kanada nach 22:00 noch ein Bierchen zu kaufen.
• Warmes chinesisches Bier tut’s dann auch.
• Auch ein Getränkeautomat ist eine Sehenswürdigkeit und ebenso würdig in allen Posen fotografiert zu werden.
• Als Busfahrer verdient man gar nicht so schlecht. Fährt aber ziemlich viel Bus.

• People in China have a maximum of 10 days of vacation per year. Which probably leads to another way of travelling.
• If you’re in a bus full of asians who are crossing the border without problems, you as an – in this group – untypical german guy will be asked for a nice Q&A with an officer.
• When you get your meal in a chinese restaurant start eating without questioning if the meal is, what you’ve actually ordered. Probably 10 minutes later somebody will bring you your correct meal and you got laughters and a free meal.
• Burping out loud is totally ok.
• It is very difficult, nearly impossible to buy a beer after 10pm in Canada.
• Warm, chinese beer will do it then.
• A vending machine is also an attraction and totally worth to be photographed in every possible pose.
• You earn good money as a bus driver. But you drive busses a lot.

Hinweis: Ich möchte mit diesem Artikel keinen beleidigen oder über Reisestile herziehen, sondern nur (ironisch) beschreiben, wie ich es empfunden habe, da ich persönlich einen anderen Reisestil bevorzuge. Hab doch alle lieb. Alles in allem nochmal ein paar entspannte Tage zum Schluss meiner USA-Tour. War schön :)Disclaimer: I don’t want to offend nobody or somebodys way of travelling. I just describing it (ironicly) from my point of view, because I prefer another way of travelling. Altogether some relaxing days at the end of my stay in the U.S. Was nice :-)

Letzten Donnerstag bin ich in St. Louis von Johnny (via warmshowers.org) aufgenommen worden und hätte nicht mehr Glück haben können. In seiner WG mit Tim und Delmar hab ich moch sofort wohl, willkommen und auch ein bisschen heimisch gefühlt. Eigentlich wollte ich nur ein oder zwei Nächte bleiben aber die Stadt und die Leute die ich kennenlernen durfte haben mich dann doch länger behalten und ich muss sagen, dass ich in St. Louis bisher die tollste Zeit in den Staaten hatte! Mit einem weinenden Auge (aber auch einem erwartungsfreudigen) geht’s dann heute weiter Richtung Ostküste. Mein Dank geht an Johnny, Meghan, Tim, Rebecca, James, Delmar und alle anderen :-)Last Thursday I arrived in St. Louis, got hosted by Johnny (via warmshowers.org) and could’nt have had more luck! In his shared house with Tim and Delmar I felt good, welcomed and a bit like home from the start. Actually I just wantedt to stay one or two nights but they got me to stay much longer and I have to admin that the best time in the US I had in St. Louis! With mixed emotions today I am leaving and heading to the east coast. Many thanks go to Johnny, Meghan, Tim, Rebecca, James, Delmar and all the others :-)

In den letzten Tagan war ich hauptsächlich in Utah unterwegs und wie man vielleicht auch im Video und auf den Bildern sehen kann, hat es mir hier bisher landschaftlich am besten gefallen. Wirklich atemberaubend schön! Aber abgesehen von der tollen Landschaft, möchte ich mal was zu den Menschen loswerden. Man trifft unheimlich viele interessante, nette, hilfsbereite, interessierte Leute hier und da:In the last days I mainly was on the road in Utah and as you may see in the video or on the photos, I really liked this area most so far. Really breathtakingly beautiful! But besides of that I want to say something about the people. You met a lot of interesting, helpful, nice and interested guys here and there:

• Helen und Anna haben mich ne Woche in ihrem Appartment in San Francisco wohnen lassen.
• Yosi, Alex und das ganze Murray-Haus haben mit ebenfalls ne Woche in ihrem Haus in San Francisco wohnen lassen.
• Tom aus Carmel hat mich und Mathilde abends zum Bierchen aufm Campingplatz eingeladen
• Meine Warmshower-Hosts in L.A. haben mich eine Woche bei ihnen Wohnen lassen und mit Essen versorgt.
• Von Tom, der mich mit Ducktape, Wasser und Motivation versorgt hab, habt ihr hier schon gelesen.
• Als ich mal kurz angehalten habe, um auf die Karte zu gucken, hat eine Frau angehalten und mir meine Trinkflaschen mit kühlem Eiswasser aufgefüllt.
• Meine Warmshower-Hosts in San Diego haben mir abgesehen vom Essen einen weitere Flaschenhalter samt Trinkflasche geschenkt.
• Als ich Pause an einer Tanke gemacht hat, hat mir jemand eine leckere Zimtschnecke von Burger King geschenkt.
• Eine Gruppe Radler, die ich getroffen habe, schenkten mir einfach so 20 Dollar, nachdem ich erzählte, dass ich nur zelte und sparsam reise.
• Meine Warmshower-Hosts in Pheonix Silverio und Susan haben mich ins Restaurant und zum Baseballmatch eingeladen und sind mit mir zum REI und Walmart gefahren.
• Als ich mal einen Platten hatte und keinen Reserveschlauch und Flickzeug übrige hat Tom angehalten und mir Flickzeug und einen Reserveschlauch geschenkt.
• Der östliche Campingplatz am Grand Canyon war voll, so dass mich Tim, Elizabeth, Vincent und Meg (Australien) auf ihren Platz und zum Essen eingeladen haben.
• Nach einer anstrengenden Etappe mit viel Gegenwind (um die 90 km/h sagte der Wetterbericht) hatte ich kein Wasser mehr und habe an ‘nem Haus gefragt. Tim und seine Frau haben mich mit Wasser, Brot, Obst und Gemüse versorgt.
• Im Bryce Canyon habe ich Stefan und Tanja aus Augsburg getroffen, die mich zum Bierchen, zum Frühstück und zur Wanderung durch den Bryce Canyon eingeladen haben.
• Am nächsten Tag habe ich Danny und Kyle getroffen und wir sind 7 Tage zusammen geradelt, haben viel gesehen und erlebt und unheimlich viel Spass miteinander gehabt.
• Unsere Warmshower-Hosts Bill und Sue aus Mancos versorgten und mit Pancakes und Brownies und liehen uns ihr Auto um in den Mesa Verde Nationalpark zu fahren.
• Hier und da habe ich Kaffee oder Softdrinks spendiert bekommen.

• Helen and Anna hosted me one week in their apartment in San Francisco.
• Yosi, Alex and and the whole Murray-House hosted me one more week in San Francisco.
• Tom from Carmel invited me and Mathilde to a beer on the campground.
• My Warmshower-Hosts in L.A. hosted me one week and feeded me.

• Once I did a short stop to have a look on the map, a woman stopped and refilled my bottles with cool icewater.
• My Warmshower-Hosts in San Diego gave me beside food also a bottler holder including a bottle.
• Once I rested at a gas station a guy gave me a tasty cinamon roll from Burger King.
• A group of cyclists I met just gave me $20 after I told them I am mostly camping and travelling lowcost.
• My Warmshower-Hosts in Pheonix Silverio and Susan invited me to a restaurant and a Baseballmatch and gave me a ride to REI and Walmart.
• Once I had a flat tire and no tube in reserve or patches, Tom stopped and gave me a tube and patches.
• The eastern campground at the Grand Canyon was full but Tim, Elizabeth, Vincent and Meg (Australia) invited me on their site and dinner.
• After an exhausting stage with a lot of headwind (forecast said 60mph) I didn’t had water left and just asked at a house. Tim and his wife gave me water, bread, fruits and vegetables.
• At the Bryce Canyon I met Stefan and Tanja from Augsburg (Ggermany) and they invited me to a beer, to breakfast and to hike with them through the canyon.
• A day later I met Danny and Kyle and we rode together 7 days, saw a lot, experienced a lot and had a lot of fun together.
• Our Warmshower-Hosts Bill and Sue in Mancos gave us Brownies, pancakes and their car to got to Mesa Verde National Park.
• Here and there I just got a coffee or a soda.

Überall wird man interessiert gefragt, woher man kommt, wohin man fährt und daraus entwickeln sich interessante Gespräche. Man kriegt viel Tipps zur Gegend und Einladungen und auch viele andere Dinge, wie ihr sehen könnt. Mit soviel Herzlichkeit hab ich eigentlich gar nicht gerechnet und bin ein bisschen gerührt :-)Everywhere you be asked where you’re from, where you’re going and you get interesting conversations. You get many recommendations, invitations and a lot of other stuff as you can see. I didn’t expect so much warmth and am a bit touched :-)
